SHOUKINKAN

Located on the grounds of Kiyomizu Temple, Shoukinkan is a Japanese style inn with a 140 year history. The grounds are home to a thousand year old cedar tree, beautiful nature and rich history, so many people visit every year. Although Shoukinkan is an Inn, it is also possible to stop by and enjoy lunch. Here, guests are able to try "shojin-ryori," a vegetarian cuisine originating from the dietary restrictions of Buddhist monks. Because meat and fish were banned to be eaten, shojin-ryori focused on using vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and seaweed to create beautiful dishes that looked just like meat dishes. Shoukinkan's cuisine was a big influence in Kyoto style meal aesthetics. Healthy, appealing to the eye, and delicious, Shoukinkan's cuisine is highly enjoyable while looking out over Kiyomizu Temple's gardens, pagoda and temples.
